THE CHARACTER
Character Name: Jyn Erso
Series: Star Wars
Canon Point: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, after her father dies on Eadu
Character Age: 22
Background: LINK
Personality:Jyn had been at the Empire’s mercy before. Sometimes she’d even deserved her troubles—she couldn’t blame some petty dictator for ordering her dragged off the street and slammed into holding when she really, truly was planning to blow up his ship and steal his guns.( rogue one novelization )
Jyn Erso is a survivor. She has grown up in a world of war, oppressed by the industrial Galactic Empire, with only the bravest rebel cells rising against them. She has outlived her parents, with her mother and father murdered before her eyes (her mother, when she was a child; her father, only recently). Raised and, in the process, trained, by Saw Gerrera, among his extremist rebel group, Jyn became a soldier at a young age. Saw notes she was his best student, executing everything from sniper missions to hand-to-hand interactions (sometimes a success and sometimes earning her broken bones). However, Saw abandoned her when rumours of her father's defection to the Empire and her relation to him became too great. From then on, Jyn fought for herself as a multi-aliased thief and petty troublemaker. She prefers to stay out of political strife, believing herself to have lost "the luxury of political opinions" and proves reluctant to assist the Rebellion, despite the threat of the Empire. In truth, she's as lost as she is empty, unfulfilled by her present occupation and prickly over past abandonment.
As a result, she has a quiet confidence — certainly aware of her strength in strategy and combat. More often than not, she comes across as emotionally closed-off, cynical, and judgmental, to boot. It's hard to impress or faze her these days, as she distances herself from everyone but a select few who prove themselves worthy. Her sense of humour, too, proves sharp and dry. When her cellmate states that she will kill her, Jyn quips, "What if I kill you first?" and calls K-2SO's dismissal of her "charming." She's no jokester, but she finds some things darkly amusing and offers a rude observation when challenged (describing K-2SO as "target-practice" to highlight her point that he ought to stay behind). For her, the grifter life is about two things: survival and rebellion. Not the flashy, spirited rebellion of Saw or of the Rebel Alliance — a simple refusal to submit to a peaceful life, given her inner turmoil about her own place in this world (traitor's daughter, once rebel, no one). While she never agreed with the Empire, Saw's methods and abandonment (and her father's relation to the Empire) left the lines between good and evil invariably blurred. She might as well not bother with either group, instead taking care of herself and her companions. That said, she restricted her robberies to known Empire affiliates and stashes where possible. In this way, cognizant of how harsh and stunted her childhood was, Jyn values innocence in others, leaving civilians uninvolved in her schemes and even going so far as to risk her life to protect a child on Jedha. Her history has made her harsh, but if she identifies innocence or warmth in others, she will be kind.
Galen and Saw tore at her together now, asking for what she’d refused them already, demanding recompense for every way she’d failed them and every day Liana and Tanith and Kestrel had lived their own glorious, petty existences. But she had nothing to give them—she was hollow, and even what she’d kept in the cave was lost to darkness. All she had left was the voice of a hologram.( rogue one novelization )
Her typically gruff, casual appearance has also faltered several times. On some level, as afraid as she is of trusting others, she wants to build lasting connections. Her instinct is to remain vigilant and lash out against those who attempt to engage with her. However, she’s lonely. If she wasn’t, she never would have trusted Cassian enough to allow him to leave the ship on Eadu in the first place. In a way, she desires the family she never had. When Cassian proves himself as loyal to her and her cause, Jyn admits, "I'm not used to people sticking around when things go bad." Additionally, she immediately connects with both Bodhi and K-2SO, paying close enough attention to the latter to recall his desire for a blaster and ultimately trusting him with one (despite his Imperial origins). She rewards individual's support for her by acting with fewer inhibitions around them. When Cassian tells her, “Rebellions are built on hope,” Jyn ultimately appears drawn to his idealism, incorporating his words into her improvised speech to the Rebel Alliance.
Despite her deep-seated loss, shame over her father's affiliations, and, later, regret for failing to trust him, she retains a spark of life. Notably, Jyn also enjoys the adrenaline of a con and a fight, the thrill of the act and the euphoria of success. In the novelization, Cassian attributes a "fire" and "hunger" to her. Part of this fire burns in anger (over Saw leaving her, her losses, her mistakes). Stubborn and ballsy, she refuses to die, willing to attempt anything to move further along her path. Once she finds her purpose, her single-minded determination drives her to push past Cassian's apparent loss and her own severe leg wound to achieve her goal: transmitting the death star plans. Her fierceness augments her intelligence, aiding her improvisation (striking a rescuer at the perfect moment and quickly locating a shovel to utilize as a weapon). Her cleverness also shines when she joins Cassian on various successful missions, including the final infiltration of Scarif base.
Her canon point leaves her on the precipice of forming stronger connections — of choosing hope and rebellion over a life of merely surviving. The loss of her father and Cassian's apparent attempt to assassinate him have left her hurt and bitter once more, but she now understands that the Empire is the ultimate threat. The Death Star is real and deadly and must be stopped.
Sign her up for rebellion.
Powers/Abilities: While Jyn has no powers, she has honed several abilities.FIREARMS & COMBAT.Power Nerfs (if applicable): n/a
From a young age, Saw Gerrera trained Jyn as a soldier and rebel. He later states she was the most skilled member of his extremist faction. Although she's neither the biggest nor the strongest gal in the prison yard, she is capable of besting a group of trained storm troupers alone in hand-to-hand combat. She has intimate knowledge of most firearms, including their disassembly/assembly and suitability for different situations. In addition, she has excellent aim, mentioning sniper abilities in the novelization.
STRATEGY & ESCAPOLOGY.
Since she began her work as a thief, Jyn has planned and executed numerous successful cons, ranging from forgery to petty theft to shipjacking to escaping custody. A cunning strategist, Jyn works well even when improvising.
Inventory:( 1 ) outfit, including underwear, socks, light shirt, trousers, combat boots, belt, pair of fingerless gloves, and scarfIncentives:
( 1 ) blaster pistol
( 1 ) kyber crystal necklaceGiven her past experiences, Jyn will regard the Natha with suspicion. However, the destruction of worlds and loss of loved ones tugs at her rusty heartstrings, making her more willing to cooperate, at least for the time being. Oh, and she's still a bit of a self-interested thief, so she would ask for a weapon or power to be provided at a later date. Better safe than dead.

mess hall.
[ Jyn Erso has yet to eat anything in the mess hall today — in fact, one might recognize her as the woman prone to eating takeaway, leaving before she has to engage with crowds of her fellow crew members. It isn’t so much that she’s anti-social, but rather unused to such extended contact with so many. Not a loner, no, but someone accustomed to solitude. (Prison does that to you.)training.
Today, she upends a bowl of neon fruits into her satchel. After peering into the bag and giving it a light shake, she appears satisfied with her meal and latches the bag shut. On her way out, she snags a shot of something electric blue off a tray, whiffs the familiar scent of alcohol, and downs it in one.
Her next step never hits the floor, as she begins floating upwards. Instinctively, she attempts to fight the peculiar sensation, kicking out and sending the tray of shots spiralling toward her unsuspecting, fellow diners. ][ gruffly — ] Hold this.omage.
